John Lennon Sings Christmas Carols – Sort Of

I first did a Christmas show with John Shortis and Moya Simpson at the Street Theatre in 2003.  They already had a bit, routinely called Clever Carols, that involved making familiar Christmas carols work in counter-melodic ways with other songs.  I thought it was fab, and set about making what contrapuntal contributions I could.

In 2005, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of John Lennon’s death, we did a John Lennon version of the carols, and this year (the 30th anniversary), we reprised it.

So here it is, raw and live, recorded nearly two Sundays ago:

The combinations are as follows:

Imagine/Away in a Manger,

This Boy/The Christmas Song/Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,

Winter Wonderland/I Am the Walrus/Yellow Submarine/Being for the Benefit of Mister Kite,

I Saw Three Ships/Joy to the World/Norwegian Wood/Working Class Hero,

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer/Give Peace a Chance,

Jealous Guy/O Little Town of Bethlehem,

Happy Xmas (War is Over)/Jingle Bells

Me – piano/vocals, John – guitar/vocals, Moya – vocals
